My Resolution

I don't believe in New Year's resolutions. I believe that when you have identified a weakness in yourself, it is your responsibility to fix it now, not once the New Year comes around. Even though my resolution to live a healthier lifestyle came in January, I won't call it a New Year's resolution. It's just my resolution.

As my post "A New Beginning" explains, I have lived a very sickly life since my earlier twenties. I was a very healthy kid, but one bout of pneumonia and a lifestyle of fast food, no exercise, and lack of sleep has cost me dearly in that department.

It's time to take steps to change all of that and get back to being healthy. My focus is in three areas.

  1. Diet - Fast food is bad. We all know that, but it's so convenient! My goal here is to severely decrease fast and junk food (I believe cutting it completely is unrealistic) while increasing my intake of foods packed with vitamins, such as fruits and vegetables.
  2. Exercise - Increasing this won't be difficult as I didn't get any exercise at all. A walk down the street and back home would be more exercise than I used to get. My goal here is to get 20 - 30 minutes on weekdays, bonus for Saturdays, and leaving Sunday as my day of rest.
  3. Sleep - Sleep is an important part of staying healthy. As a parent, my free time often comes after the kids go to bed and I'm often tempted to extend that time by delaying my own bed time. I need to make sure I'm getting 7 - 8 hours of sleep each night and in a comfortable bed.
My hope is that I can change the way I eat, exercise, and sleep. It's a complete change in how I've lived for over fifteen years and it will be difficult. I will persevere, though, and a year from now, I expect to be writing about my successes. Thank you for reading "What On Earth Am I Doing?" and keeping me accountable.
